Defying the odds and redefining resilience, Nompumelelo Malabela’s remarkable journey as a student entrepreneur is a testament to the power of determination. Nompumelelo Erica Malabela, a second-year Media Studies student at the University of Limpopo, was born and raised in Khujwana village, Tzaneen.
She owns Nails by Mpumi, a business she started during a challenging time in her life due to a lack of financial support. Unable to pay her registration fees, she took matters into her own hands and found a job as an assistant teacher in her village. “I used my first salary to buy my first nail kit, with the goal of saving for my registration,” she recalls.
After enrolling at the university, Nompumelelo continued her business, realizing its potential. She uses her earnings not only to support herself but also her son and siblings. As a young woman in business, Nompumelelo has faced challenges, particularly from people trying to take advantage of her kindness. “Some expect favors, not understanding that we rely on this income to survive,” she says.
Determined to be independent and serve as a role model, Nompumelelo is also committed to helping others. She teaches young women nail technician skills, such as shaping, styling, and applying nail gel, for a fee. “I’ve seen many young women passionate about being nail technicians. After all, we’re all just trying to make ends meet,” she explains.
