The University of Limpopo recently hosted the 2nd SRC 2025/26 Academic and Psychosocial Workshop Programme, aimed at equipping Student Representative Council (SRC) members with essential academic and mental health support tools.

The workshop served as a reminder that while SRC members lead and represent students, they also require continuous support to succeed in their own academic and personal lives.

Mohlake Mosimaneotsile from the Centre for Academic Excellence led a session on academic support. He encouraged SRC members to adopt effective study habits, urging them to focus on understanding rather than memorisation. “Do not read to forget, but read to understand and enjoy your studies,” he said.

He further reminded members that serving in the SRC does not replace their role as students, emphasising the importance of prioritising their academic responsibilities. Mosimaneotsile also guided members on how to structure and write professional documents, highlighting that the Centre for Academic Excellence (CAE) offers support through reviewing and editing student work.

Mabina Anna, a psychologist from the centrefor Student Counselling and Development, addressed the psychosocial aspect of student leadership. She emphasised the importance of teamwork, mutual respect, and understanding within the SRC. “Be willing to learn,” she advised, adding that leaders should “focus on the issues, not the people.” She also encouraged members to make use of support services available at D-Block to maintain their wellbeing.

In her closing remarks, Anna urged SRC members to strive for excellence. “Perform well so that you disband with pride at the end of your term,” she said. She also shared the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) helpline (0800 567 567), which operates 24/7 to assist students in need.

Deputy SRC President Maredi Mogau concluded the workshop by expressing appreciation for the initiative, noting its importance in guiding SRC members throughout their leadership journey.

The workshop reinforced the importance of balancing leadership responsibilities with academic performance and mental wellbeing, ensuring that SRC members remain both effective leaders and successful students.
