The University of Limpopo Student Representative Council (SRC) hosted a vibrant Sports Day event, giving students a platform to unwind, participate in physical activities, and foster community spirit. The initiative aimed to promote mental well-being, social connection, and teamwork.

The day kicked off with a high-energy aerobics session led by Lesley Mokgolobote, a second-year BSc Mathematical Sciences student and award-winning instructor, got students moving. “The aerobic activities were vital to activate students’ bodies and stretch their muscles,” Mokgolobote explained. The field then came alive with lively games like three-legged races, spoon-and-egg races, and tug of war.
Loretta Mohale, Chairperson of Sports and Recreation, said, “All we wanted was to give students a chance to have fun and express themselves through sports.” The day began with branded T-shirts and caps featuring the university logo, symbolizing unity and shared identity.

Students were divided into four teams, distinguished by cap colors, and encouraged teamwork and friendly competition. Ndou Murendeni Makhadzi, a BSc Soil Science student, exclaimed, “Racing with an egg on a spoon is not as easy as it seems!” Nostalgia played a key role, with students enjoying childhood games like skipping rope, dodgeball, and traditional circle games.
Lehlogonolo Selotolo, a third-year BA Media Studies student, said, “It felt like reliving my life all over again. Being here was the best decision I could have made.” The Sports Day proved to be a refreshing break from academic pressures, promoting mental well-being and social connection. With laughter, sweat, and shared stories, the event left students with memories to cherish, reminding everyone of the simple joy found in play.
The event showcased the importance of balancing academics with extracurricular activities, fostering a sense of community and belonging among students. As the day came to a close, students left with big smiles, already looking forward to the next Sports Day event.
