The University of Limpopo’s (UL) Hip Hop crew, The Phenomenals, has once again made history by retaining their University Sport South Africa (USSA) championship title for the third time consecutively. The team, coached by UL Dance Sport coach Happy and Hip Hop crew head coach Minorite “McMinnie Chauke,” recently showcased their skills at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (UKZN).
With months of preparation, the Phenomenals delivered a stellar performance, taking home the street dance formation and overall titles, along with 20 medals and certificates, and 26 trophies for solo and duo dances.

According to Coach Minorite, “I feel blessed, and I appreciate the team and God for making it happen.” This victory marks the third time The Phenomenals have dominated the USSA competition, solidifying their reputation as a top-tier Hip Hop crew.
Team member Primrose Masebe, a Masters student in Bsc Environment and Resource Studies who’s been part of The Phenomenals since 2023, acknowledged the challenges they faced, given the limited preparation time. “It was hard, but we had the best coaches. We managed, even though I was scared we might be sabotaged.”

Some crew members also participated in ballroom dance, juggling both styles required immense dedication. Assistant coach Omphile Thibela, a final year student in Media Studies, shared his experience, “Being in both street dance and ballroom was a test to my body, and the tiredness I felt after, was intense, but it was all worth it.”
