At just 24, Mmirwa Jacob Mangena is already making his mark in the legal world. A recent graduate with a Master’s in Labour Law from the University of Limpopo(UL) , he’s proving that resilience and purpose can take you from humble beginnings to high-powered ambitions. Raised by a single mother in Lenyenye township near Tzaneen, Mangena’s journey was never smooth. “With my mother’s support, I developed a growth mindset, practiced self-compassion, and honed my problem-solving skills,” he says. Her encouragement became the fuel for his academic climb.

Arriving at UL in 2019, Mangena was met with challenges from the jump, literally sleeping in queues just to secure admission. But he didn’t let that stop him. Instead, he immersed himself in student politics, sharpening his leadership skills and becoming an advocate for student rights .His hustle didn’t end there. He pushed through his undergraduate studies in record time and then levelled up with a postgraduate degree. “Challenges are opportunities for growth,” he says. “Focus is key to success.”

Now a candidate at Mashabela Attorneys Inc., Mangena isn’t slowing down. He’s passionate about labour law not just as a profession but as a tool for driving social change. “Law goes beyond the courtroom, it’s a way to empower communities,” he says.

He hopes his story inspires others facing academic and personal hurdles. “Be prepared to work hard. Sharpen your critical thinking. Build discipline,” he advises students who may be on the same rocky road.

From sleeping in queues to stepping into courtrooms, Mmirwa is proof that a determined mind backed by purpose and support can defy the odds and redefine success on your own terms.
