For many juniors, the debates struck a personal chord. “Debate gives us the courage to speak about the changes we want in education,” said participant Onel Thema. “Decolonisation is not just theory; it’s about our future.”

In the senior category, debates tackled complex topics such as gender-neutral human rights policies, the impact of social media and privacy laws on health, and whether student debt should be reported to credit bureaus. Teams presented well-researched arguments, showcasing their critical thinking and public speaking skills. The senior tab team, led by Ishmael Phalana, oversaw accurate scoring. The winning senior teams demonstrated exceptional debating prowess, impressing judges and audience members alike.

Reflecting on the experience, Kgodiso Maswi noted, “These debates test more than knowledge; they test empathy, courage, and the ability to think for society, not just yourself.” The championship proved once again that debate is more than competition it is a platform for shaping informed, critical, and courageous leaders. From the urgency of decolonising education to the ethics of governance, the University of Limpopo provided a stage where the voices of South Africa’s future shone brightly.
