The University of Limpopo’s Centre for Student Counselling and Development (CSCD) brought the glitz and glamour to Meropa Casino and Entertainment World in Polokwane, as it rolled out a red carpet of gratitude to honour its peer counsellors. It was an evening where dedication met elegance, and applause echoed for those whose compassion guided countless students through mental health and psychosocial challenges.

According to CSCD Deputy Director and psychologist, Vincent Cloete, the purpose of the gala is to “celebrate, honour, acknowledge, and reward the hard work and dedication of the peer counsellors who served throughout 2025.” He expressed profound gratitude, saying, “Without you, none of our programmes would have been possible.”
Guest speaker Frans Shika, a case consultant and social worker from Lyra Southern Africa, inspired attendees with a powerful reminder of purpose and perseverance. “You gave the UL community a place of emotional healing, restoration, and deliverance for the success of the students” he said.
The night glowed with emotion and reflection as Malemela Raesetsa, coordinator and clinical psychologist, praised the counselors for their unwavering service. “It is not easy to serve without getting paid, but you were always there saying ‘thuma mina’ – send me. You lived, loved, grew, and served this centre professionally.” she said.

Awards recognizing excellence in overall service including campaigns, media engagements, and student referrals amongst others illuminated the evening. The pinnacle of the night came when Agobakwe Legobye, a Bachelor of Psychology student, was named the outstanding peer counselor of 2025. “We’ve done well in rendering the centre’s services and left a mark that will be remembered for decades.” Legobye said.
Echoing the same spirit, Mojalefa Heirness, a representative of the Centre, commended the counsellors, “we saw you. You sowed hard work and dedication into the centre, and we appreciate you.” She said.

Smakaleng Maapolela, also a psychology student, shared the pride of recognition, “I feel good because my hard work was recognised.”
Motsomane Morwaswi, Chairperson of Peer Counselors, reflected on their collective journey, “We celebrate the impact we have made on the UL community. We were not deterred nor demoralized under the hot sun of the campus. We remained committed to our mandate.”

The night was an exquisite blend of celebration, gratitude, and inspiration, dazzling with music, poetry, and dance. The peer counselors finally basked in the spotlight they so richly deserved.
