There’s something special and unique about university friendships, connections born not from shared spaces, emotional need, and perfect timing. Strangers met in hallways, lecture rooms, WhatsApp groups, and before you know it, those strangers become family.

Karabo Phokungwane (19), a second-year Optometry student at the University of Limpopo from Tzaneen, described friendship as “finding family in strangers.” She did not expect to meet someone who would understand her so deeply, so quickly. Within weeks of arriving at university, she found what she calls her emotional twin and safe space.

For Phokungwane, true friendship is built on mutual effort. It involves showing up, being present, and choosing one another continuously. “Friends can’t fix everything, but they make life easier. With the right people around you, the hard days feel a little lighter,” she said.

Confidence Moabelo (25), a final-year BSc Physical Science student from Ga-Matlala Phoffu, shared similar sentiments. “To me, friendship is a second family. It’s not about blood, it’s about shared values, love, and dreams,” she said. Being far from home, she found her circle of friend’s early people who have become her emotional support system.

Moabelo regards friendship as essential for academic survival. “A true friend keeps you focused, not distracted,” she added.

Manganye Tshepang Shalate (19), a first-year Bachelor of Sociology and Anthropology student from Moletjie Ga-Mabiloane, believes “True friendship is built on love, loyalty, care, and reliability.” “Friendship is work, but it’s beautiful work,” she said. “It’s in the small gestures, listening, showing up, and making sure they know they matter.” For Shalate, open communication, appreciation, and resolving issues before they grow are key to lasting bonds.

In a world where university life often feels overwhelming and uncertain, these friendships are more than just social connections. They are sources of growth, healing, and unwavering support proof that even in the busiest of chapters in life, meaningful relationships can flourish.
