The University of Limpopo’s LGBTQ+ community recently hosted a lively and inclusive movie night that sparked meaningful conversations and deepened connections among students and staff. Held at the VL Dining Hall, the event brought together students, allies, and members of the LGBTQ+ community for an entertaining and affirming evening.

The featured film, Head of State, delivered high-energy action while also prompting reflections on themes of identity, teamwork, and resilience. But beyond the screen, the purpose was clear fostering a sense of presence, belonging, and visibility within the university environment.

Deputy chairperson of the UL Rainbow, Regina Mamabolo, emphasised the deeper impact of such gatherings, “Events like movie nights can have a significant positive impact on student mental health and stress relief ”she says. “They foster a sense of community and social bonding, reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation, and provide a sense of belonging and inclusivity. They also serve as a mood booster, decreasing signs of depression,” she added.

“This initiative aligns with the University of Limpopo’s broader commitment to fostering diversity, equality, and inclusion, creating a safe and supportive environment for individuals from all backgrounds,” says Mamabolo.

Tshegofatso Mmolawa, a final-year student, appreciated the event for providing a much-needed break from academic pressures, allowing him to meet new people and unwind. “Events like this are a great way to relax and network while taking a breather from academics,” he said. Benny Nthani, a final-year student, supported the same view, “The movie night was quite a refreshing event. Although it was only a few hours, I believe that short escape made a noticeable difference to my mental health.”

The evening was more than just a movie screening, it was an immersive experience filled with warmth, laughter, and inclusivity. With light snacks and a lively atmosphere, the event provided students with a safe and vibrant space to recharge and connect. As the organisers described it, the event was truly “full of love”.
