A final-year communication studies student at the University of Limpopo, Khomotso Asnath Kekana,  is proving that hard work really does pay off. Recently honored as a top achiever in the Faculty of Humanities, she’s a firm believer in the power of dedication, even in the face of tough circumstances.

Kekana’s success is deeply rooted in her background and her mother’s unwavering support. “I didn’t have a childhood like everyone else,” she reflects. “That’s why I’m so committed to my studies.” Her mother has gone to great lengths to support her academic journey, and in turn, strives to make her proud.

When asked how she juggles her academic responsibilities with personal life, she’s clear about her priorities. “I focus about 60-70% on academics, and personal life is 30-40%. Boundaries are essential.” Following a strict study routine, she also relies on techniques like “active recall” — writing down everything she studies to reinforce her memory.

Her journey wasn’t without challenges. The loss of her father during her first year affected her deeply, impacting her studies. But she found strength in her faith, explaining, “I believe God is the solution to all problems, so prayer is my go-to in hard times.”

Looking ahead, Kekana sees herself in marketing or corporate communications, driving collaboration and productivity. Winning an academic award has only strengthened her drive. For her, it’s proof that dreams can be achieved through commitment. Her message to fellow students is clear “Study intensively. Set boundaries, follow through, and you’ll get there.”
