Mutavhatsindi Ofhani Ayen, a Bachelor of Laws student at the University of Limpopo, has seamlessly integrated his passion for creative arts and music into his life. A skilled guitarist, he uses music as a form of self-expression, balancing his artistic creativity with his legal studies.
Born in Vhangani village, Limpopo, Ofhani’s fascination with art began at the age of 7. However, it wasn’t until he was 9 that he realized drawing was more than just a hobby—it was a core part of his identity. His artistic journey was nurtured by his mother, who drew dolls, and his uncle Rilwele, a talented cartoon sketcher. Their influence sparked his imagination and inspired him to pursue art.
“In primary school, I found a book of my uncle’s Dragon Ball Z sketches. I convinced my classmates I drew them, which pushed me to improve my skills,” says Ofhani.
Ofhani’s love for music began with a childhood friend’s grandfather’s guitar but remained a dream until 2020, when a classmate gifted him a guitar during his first year at university.
Growing up in a remote village presented many challenges, including limited access to resources. “I always wanted a guitar, but it was never a possibility,” Ofhani shares. Despite this, he persisted in learning to play. “Learning the guitar came with its own hurdles,” he explains. “I had to do with a broken-stringed classical guitar instead of an acoustic one, and online tutorials were overwhelming with too much theory. So, I focused on learning chords, which allowed me to play the songs I love.”

When this ambitious creative recognized his abilities, he aspired to enrol in a specialized arts school to enhance his skills and become a professional artist, however due to financial constraints, it didn’t come to fruition. Through it all he remained undeterred in the pursuit of art as he adapted everyday objects to express his art, “I had to make do with what I had, like using broken doors or calendar backs as materials for drawing.” Despite these obstacles, he persisted in his artistic journey.
Notable Musical Achievements:
One of the standout achievements in Ofhani’s musical journey is the formation of his band, Symphony of Souls, a diverse group of instrumentalists and vocalists. He aspires to record his own songs and collaborate with other artists.
Shared Performances Include:
- Limpopo Department of Arts and Culture Capricorn District Ga-Molepo event (2023): Ofhani performed with Sun-Moon, continuing to play despite two broken guitar strings towards the end of the performance.
- University of Limpopo First Year’s Performing Arts Initiation: Symphony of Souls collaborated with Mr. Serious.
- University of Limpopo Counselling Department’s Motivational Event: Delivered a memorable performance alongside Sovenga’s Rhapsody.
- Mr. and Mrs. UL and Miss Thick Madame 2024: Symphony of Souls ushered the top five finalists at this event, organized by Turf Royalty.
- Collaboration with My Silver Stripes: Directed by Mr. UL 2024/25.
- Polokwane Theatre Festival 2024.
Ofhani believes that art, particularly portraits, serves as a medium to convey hidden emotions. He emphasizes that all careers have their roots in artistic expression, highlighting the importance of sketches even in fields like surgery and engineering.
“After some time of analysing what art is, I’ve come to realize that in art there are no mistakes. Any perceived mistakes are only seen by me, while others view my artwork as perfect. This applies to life too; mistakes in life help us grow and realize what we’re meant to do. Just as unwanted lines in art can be blended into the piece, mistakes in life can become valuable experiences.
