Meet Llane Reneilwe Melba, a 22-year-old media student at the University of Limpopo, who dared to turn her passion into a thriving business. Born in Moletjie Makgodu Village, Limpopo, Llane’s entrepreneurial journey began on April 21, 2024, when she launched her baking goods business.

For Llane, financial independence was the ultimate goal. She wanted to be her own boss, set her own hours, and do what she loved for a living. Financial independence, to her, means maintaining her lifestyle, having sufficient income, savings, and investments to live comfortably. This desire for autonomy and security drove her to start her business.

Llane’s love for baking sparked her business idea. Baking is not just a skill, but her therapy and passion. It brings her pure happiness and helps her express herself. With her unique talent, she saw an opportunity to generate extra income. She realized that she could monetize her baking skills and create a sustainable business.

“I realized I had a gift for baking, and I wanted to share it with the world. It’s not just about extra income, it’s about spreading joy and fulfilling my passion.”

To reach customers, Llane leverages social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok, and Instagram. She also distributes printed flyers at local businesses and conducts research to understand her target market. Additionally, she relies on word-of-mouth marketing, asking friends and family to post flyers on her behalf in their homes and stores.

As a student entrepreneur, Llane faces several challenges. Limited financing resources and fundraising knowledge hinder her growth. Balancing her social life, school life, and business responsibilities is also a struggle. Moreover, managing slow business periods and coping with academic stress and business stress can be overwhelming.

Honestly, being a student entrepreneur is not easy. I mostly  have  limited capital, carrying tasks, and stress. But here’s the thing – staying strong and pushing through is what gets me past the tough situations.”

Despite these challenges, Llane’s journey teaches valuable lessons. Her story shows that passion can be a powerful driver for success. Financial independence is achievable through entrepreneurship, and effective marketing strategies can make or break a business. Most importantly, resilience is key to overcoming challenges.
