University of Limpopo’s (UL) Kagiso Madise, a final-year Bachelor of Social Work student, proudly represented Team South Africa at the 2024 Confederation of University and College Sports Association (CUCSA) Tennis Games, held at the University of Zimbabwe. Competing against top university teams from across the region, Madise earned a bronze medal, showcasing his extraordinary talent and dedication on an international stage.
Madise began his tennis journey at UL in 2021 and has since become a prominent figure in university tennis. His selection for CUCSA, facilitated by the collaboration between CUCSA and University Sport South Africa (USSA), highlights his exceptional performance and commitment to the sport.
Competing against top teams, including the University of Zimbabwe A and B teams, and the National University of Science & Technology (NUST) team, Madise faced stiff competition. On the first day, he encountered tough opponents in both the Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles, which tested his skills and strategies. Despite early setbacks, Madise remained resilient, refining his game with each match. His persistence paid off on the third day when he secured a victory against a Zimbabwean player, winning with a score of 7-5, 6-4.
Reflecting on Madise’s performance, Trevor Magonyane, UL’s tennis coach and a PhD candidate in the science and agriculture department, expressed his admiration, stating, “I’m incredibly proud of the work Kagiso has put in. His performance at CUCSA was impressive, he did more than I expected. He came back a different player, he plays with more confidence now”.
Madise shared his thoughts on the experience, saying, “Participating in the CUCSA Tennis Games was an unforgettable experience that pushed me to grow both as a player and a person. Competing on an international stage allowed me to refine my strategies and learn from other top players. Off the court, I embraced the tournament’s cultural exchange, forming friendships that transcended borders and language barriers. These experiences and sporting achievements have broadened my horizons and deepened my appreciation for the sport. I’m grateful for the opportunity.”
