The University of Limpopo (UL) is making waves in South Africa’s brewing scene, thanks to the innovative UL Microbrewery team. Established in 2007 under the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Biotechnology, the team combines scientific expertise with creativity to craft unique, high-quality beers. Louis Ramoba, Senior Laboratory Assistant, mentors the team, guiding students in both academic research and hands-on brewing.
The team is led by student leaders Gavaza Mabunda and Babushi Madaba, who coordinate the passionate group of up to 25 students each year. “What makes our team special is our hard work, honesty, perseverance, respect, togetherness, and love,” says Mr. Ramoba.
Since its formation, the UL Microbrewery has proudly represented the university at the Intervarsity Brewing Competition, one of the country’s top contests for student brewers. Competing against 18 universities, the team has consistently achieved remarkable results. In 2025, they earned 2nd place in the Best Lager category, repeating their 2024 successes with 2nd place for Best Lager, 2nd place for IPA, and 3rd place for Sour Beer.

For student members, being part of the UL Microbrewery is both educational and inspiring. “Being part of the UL Microbrewery has been an amazing learning experience,” shares Lerato Makoka. “We got to brew different types of beers, each with its own recipe and flavour. I learned about the different kinds of grains, hops, and techniques that go into making each beer unique. Representing UL feels special it’s a proud moment to show what our university can do.”
The team uses professional equipment, including a 60L Demacraft for brewing, a 60L fermenter for fermentation, and a chiller to control temperature, ensuring precision in every batch. Their work supports both student training and academic research, making the microbrewery a hub for innovation and practical learning.
Looking ahead, the UL Microbrewery plans to launch a brewing training course at the university, host a testing festival to promote beer culture, and establish a spinoff mini-brewery for commercial purposes. They are also exploring contract brewing with commercial brewery Zwakala and ongoing collaborations with the UL staff cafeteria and golf club to sell their beers.
Through science, creativity, and teamwork, the UL Microbrewery is not just producing beer it’s brewing pride for the University of Limpopo.
