The University of Limpopo (UL) Rugby Field recently came alive as the UL rugby team delivered two thrilling wins against Predators and Moletji Rugby Club in a fast-paced, high-energy tournament.
Each game lasted 20 minutes, but the UL team wasted no time making their presence felt. In the first match against Predators, the team struck early with a try and maintained momentum to clinch a 15–5 victory. While the win was a confidence boost, UL Head Rugby Coach, Artwell Makhubela admitted the team didn’t fully stick to the game plan. “We reacted more than we executed, and that affected our rhythm,” he said.

Despite scoring in the first game, Nokuthula Lettie expressed disappointment. “We lacked cohesion and communication. We didn’t meet our own expectations,” she reflected. Teammate Francina Letsoalo, who sat the match out, believed she could’ve made a difference. “There were open gaps we didn’t take advantage of I saw them from the sidelines,” she said.
Then came the historic second match against Moletji. UL Rugby team turned up the heat and dominated with a 32–0 clean sheet, showing discipline, synergy, and flair. “That second game was who we really are,” said scorer and BAcc student Thabiso Mokopane. “We played smart, focused rugby.”
Other standout scorers included Rabekane Malesela (BSc Physical Science), Nokuthula Lettie Mahaole (BMedSci), Dlamini Sibongokuhle (BSc Agriculture), and Kabelo Nelly Semenya, among others.
First-year LLB student Vinolia Nemangowe didn’t get game time but remained positive. “As a junior, I’m learning from the bench,” she said.
Fans were just as fired up. “I came all the way from Joburg to watch this team because I knew they’d win,” said former UL Rugby player Maphuthi Furumele.

Beyond the scoreboard, the tournament reminded the team of rugby’s core ingredients; strategy, trust, and teamwork. With heads held high, the University of Limpopo rugby team now gears up for an even more competitive season ahead.
