The University of Limpopo School of Accountancy recently hosted a thrilling soccer and netball tournament, bringing together staff and students in a celebration of teamwork and community spirit. The event, facilitated by accounting lecturer Gibson Nyirenda and Financial Management secretary Naniki Sathekge, kicked off with an energetic aerobics session, setting the tone for a day of friendly competition.
The tournament began with an energetic aerobics’ session led by Nyirenda and Sathekge, which included stretching, running, stair-jumping, skipping rope, and other exercises to prepare participants for the games ahead.

On the netball court, the UL staff team, comprising seasoned players Modiba Mantsha, Mavis Thubane, Eva Sathekge, Maria Mehlape, Minah Mathiba, Khomotso Makgakgane, Winny Ranhlakgwe, and Maphuti Montja, demonstrated remarkable resilience. They secured a convincing victory in the first round against the students with a score of 17-8. However, the 4th-year accounting students, led by Matsitela Koena, fought back and won their round against the staff team with a score of 10-6 in a later match.
The soccer field saw an intense match between Bachelor of Commerce 3rd-year students, including Khomotso Teffo, Lucas Molepo, and Maja Malesela, and 2nd-year Bachelor of Accounting students, featuring Makgathi Keabetswe, Ngobeni Junior, and Matlala Hloriso. The BCom 3rd-year team emerged victorious, showcasing their teamwork and skills.
For many students, the tournament was about more than just winning. “Aerobics means getting into shape for me,” said BCom 3rd-year student Nelwamondo Ronewa. “I came here to refresh, exercise, and engage with other students.” Postgraduate BCom Honours student Rathongwa Wamandembe added, “These extracurricular activities improve students’ health, strengthen academic and social bonds, and encourage motivation.”
The tournament embodied the spirit of unity and teamwork that defines University of Limpopo’s sporting events. As students and staff came together, they proved that sport is as much about building relationships as it is about competition.
