The University of Limpopo’s Student Representative Council (SRC) recently organized a policy awareness session at Onkgopotse Tiro Hall to educate students on the rules and regulations governing student conduct. The event aimed to remind students that ignorance of the rules is often the reason for misconduct, rather than intentional malice.
The session provided an in-depth look at the SRC Constitution, student code of conduct, and other university policies that govern daily student life. “Students need to be aware of what is expected of them both academically and socially,” says Melusi Nxumalo, the Director of Student Life, Governance, and Development.

Moreover, Nxumalo, emphasized the importance of students being aware of their academic and social responsibilities. “Students are not allowed to start businesses or damage university property,” he said, adding that misconduct can lead to expulsion and put NSFAS funding at risk.
The Director also highlighted the requirements for student leadership, stating “first-year students are not eligible and a strong academic record is necessary to lead others.” Additionally, students were warned about sharing student cards or personal credentials, “If someone else uses your card and gets into trouble, you will be held responsible,” stressed Nxumalo.
PhD candidate and SRC adviser David Ramohola added that the SRC also plays a support role. “If you face a disciplinary hearing, the SRC can help you understand the process and advise you on how to handle it.”
Students were left with many new insights. Junior Livhelani, a first-year BSc Mathematical Sciences student, shares what he got from the event “I learned that we are governed by a constitution and must abide by it.” Nozipho Xaba, a BSc Life Sciences first-year-student, added, “Now I know that breaking university rules has real consequences.”
With the aim to serve as a wake-up call, many who were unaware of the serious implications of misconduct, were left in the knowing of their institutions rules and conduct. The SRC hopes this awareness will lead to a more informed and responsible student community.
