The Centre for Student Counselling and Development (CSCD) hosted the Face-to-Face Work Readiness Workshop for final-year and postgraduate students under the theme “Skills to Shine, Confidence to Conquer.” The three-day programme brought together stakeholders including the Alumni Office, Digital Hub, Department of Business Management, Department of Labour, the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), and the Professional Provident Society (PPS).

Event organiser Phosi Alucia Ngobeni, Graduate Placement Coordinator at CSCD, said the initiative was designed to strengthen students’ employability. “The workshop plays a crucial role in developing skills such as CV writing, interview preparation, work ethics, and entrepreneurial thinking. Our goal is to boost confidence and ensure students are ready for the job market.”

Guest speaker Luke Hlongwani from the Department of Employment and Labour encouraged students to embrace both digital and professional skills. “Innovation, communication, interpersonal skills, and computer literacy are vital in today’s world. Workplace-based learning and volunteer work are also key to gaining real-world exposure,” he said, warning graduates about the risks of negative social media use and the importance of maintaining a clean financial and legal record.

Students said the workshop left them more confident about career readiness. Final-year BSc Life Sciences student Mahlatse Maboa noted “The interview session stood out most for me. I gained new insights on workplace etiquette, CV writing, and job interview skills.” Fellow student Moshe Ngobeni also a final-year student in BSc Life Science agreed, “This knowledge boosted my confidence and preparedness for the job market.”
The workshop concluded on a high note, leaving students better equipped to transition from academia to the professional world. With expert advice and peer reflections, the programme highlighted the importance of building confidence, clarity, and essential skills to thrive in today’s competitive job market.
